It's all about speed sensors! Each wheel of your BMW has a sensor that measures how fast it's turning and reports that information to your cars computer. This information is then used to control the traction control system, braking system and ABS module. If one of these senors is dirty or gets hit by an object on the road it can stop reporting to the main computer and cause it to go into a pre-programmed emergency mode. Under this mode, you can still drive your car, but will not have the use of your traction control, ABS or other computer aided functions relating to your BMW's braking system. These sensors are relatively inexpensive to replace and a simple fix for a major safety system.
